Researchers Receive Six Student Undergraduate Research and Creativity Awards

NKU's office of Research, Grants and Contracts, is usually the place faculty go to submit grants for external funding (Link: RGC office). However, in recent years the office has become a place where undergraduate students can seek their own funding. Twice each year the office accepts applications for Student Undergraduate Reaseach and Creativity Awards (SURCA), Summer Undergraduate Research/Creativity Fellowships (SURF) (Link: application info). The SURCA award provide up to $500 to help purchase research supplies, while the SURF grant provides $2500 summer salary.

This spring semester six undergraduates in the Department of Chemistry were given $500 each for their research projects (Link: winners). To be selected for an award the students each had write a research proposal about their work, complete with detailed scientific references and a budget. The grants were competitively reviewed by a faculty committee spanning a variety of disciplines. This semester eight SURCA awards were given. To complete the process the students will be expected to present their results at the annual NKU Celebration of Research and Creativity in the Spring of 2008 (Link: Celebration Home).
