Researchers Receive Six Student Undergraduate Research and Creativity Awards NKU's office of Research, Grants and Contracts, is usually the place faculty go to submit grants for external funding (Link: RGC office). However, in recent years the office has become a place where undergraduate students can seek their own funding. Twice each year the office accepts applications for Student Undergraduate Reaseach and Creativity Awards (SURCA), Summer Undergraduate Research/Creativity Fellowships (SURF) (Link: application info). The SURCA award provide up to $500 to help purchase research supplies, while the SURF grant provides $2500 summer salary. This spring semester six undergraduates in the Department of Chemistry were given $500 each for their research projects (Link: winners). To be selected for an award the students each had write a research proposal about their work, complete with detailed scientific references and a budget. The grants were competitively reviewed by a faculty committee spanning a variety of disciplines. This semester eight SURCA awards were given.
