CHE 121L — Synthesis of Aspirin

Objectives

The objectives of this experiment are for you to learn: a) the chemistry involved in the synthesis of an ester (aspirin) from an alcohol (the alcohol functional group of salicylic acid) and an acid anhydride (acetic anhydride), b) the techniques involved in the isolation and purification of a substance, and c) the use of thin layer chromatography, melting point and infrared spectroscopy data to identify a substance.
