CHE 120L — Lewis Formulas, Formal Charge, and VSEPR
(Lab Manual Page 73)

Objectives

The objectives for this experiment are to gain experience in:  a)   writing Lewis Structures,  b)   determining the formal charge on each atom of an ion or molecule,  c)   determining whether or not there are resonance forms,  d)   predicting whether or not a molecule is polar,  e)   predicting the hybridization involved at the central atom,   f)    predicting the shape and bond angles of ions or molecules, and  g)   comparing these predictions with values calculated using molecular orbital programs and with literature values. Before class you should read sections 9.6 - 9.9, and 10.1 - 10.5 of the text Chemistry, Raymond Chang, 7th. ed, McGraw-Hill, New York, 2001.
