Introduction
CHE 105, which contains lecture and laboratory
components, were developed to improve the science
education of pre-service teachers. This
DOE/Ky
EPSCoR funded project has allowed us to introduce
numerous reforms in the chemistry curriculum for
the education majors at Northern
Kentucky University (NKU). This reform
initiative is concurrent with the Kentucky
Education Reform Act (KERA) philosophy in science
education.
This curriculum initiative involves faculty
members from both the Department
of Chemistry and the School
of Education at Northern Kentucky University.
This type of cross-college interaction has proved
to be extremely beneficial. Preliminary results
from three surveys administered in the lab and
lecture courses indicate that the project has been
successful in meeting its goals.
A paper based on this project (including the
survey results) was presented by Dr. Allen Seed of
NKU's School of Education at the International
Conference of Society for Information Technology
and Teacher Education (SITE) on April 2, 1997 in
Orlando, FL.
