Sep 11, 2009 - The NKU Chase American Constitutional Society was pleased to host guest speaker Greg Belzley on September 8, 2009. Mr. Belzley works for Dinsmore & Shohl LLP in Lexington, where he focuses his practice on the representation of plaintiffs in civil rights class actions against jails and prisons. He has extensive experience in the litigation of complex claims involving product liability and multiple injuries and fatalities, as well as cases alleging violations of Fourth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.

Students were moved by Belzley's discussion of the lack of medical care for prison inmates, as well as his points about the politics involved in trying to change the system. He related several horror stories about inmates dying in prison due to lack of proper medical supervision. These cases mainly arose out of drug addicts not given adequate care when coming off of alcohol, crack, cocaine, etc. Essentially, in one case, this led to an inmate dying from dehydration when she vomited to death. Unfortunately, Belzley believes that reform in the current prison system is difficult because any politician attempting to initiate changes is viewed as being soft on crime.

Mr. Belzley left students with the charge of trying to make the system better. Following the presentation, Chase 3L Angel Zachel said, "He was inspirational, informative, and honest." All in all, the students thought very highly of the program. One student remarked that he loved Mr. Belzley's assertion that lawyers who work against inmate rights will claim that the basis of our system of justice is property rights. Mr. Belzley quipped, "Well I don't know about you all, but I didn't go to law school to study property rights."
