Chase Student Wins Court of Appeals Case

Jul 10, 2009 - On June 26, 2009, the First District Court of Appeals reached its decision in Lewis v. Leis, a case argued by Constitutional Litigation Clinic and third year Chase student Jason Fowler in November 2008.

Jason argued that his client, Johnnie Lewis, should not have to register as a sex offender because he completed his 18 month sentence for a sex offense before July 1, 1997, the effective date of the registration statute. Despite vigorous argument from the State, the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Jason's client.

The Constitutional Litigation Clinic is sponsored by the Cincinnati-based Ohio Justice & Policy Center. Through the Clinic, third and fourth year Chase students handle cases in state and federal court under the supervision of OJPC Director and Chase Visiting Professor David Singleton. Participating students receive academic credit for the yearlong Clinic.

Jason Fowler graduated from Chase in May 2009 and plans to pursue a career in the public sector following the bar exam.
