Professor Roger Billings Addresses Murray State University

Apr 30, 2009 - NKU Chase Professor Roger Billings addressed Murray State University recently as part of the 2009 Harry Lee Waterfield Distinguished Lecture Series. Billings' speech entitled, "Abraham Lincoln: A Kentucky Politician," traced Kentucky's influence on Lincoln's political career. Billings noted that as a young man in Kentucky, Lincoln saw slaves being led south and later Lincoln experienced his first brush with the law in Kentucky, when he was accused of running a ferry without a license (he defended himself and won).

Billings concluded his presentation with a discussion of Lincoln's White House years, noting that Lincoln continued to keep tabs on his home state via local newspapers. Though the Emancipation Proclamation did not include Kentucky, Billings believes we should be proud of Lincoln and Kentucky's contributions to his political life. "We can truly call him 'A Lincoln of Kentucky,'" said Billings.

Professor Billings is renowned for his interest and scholarship on Abraham Lincoln. He has given numerous presentations on Lincoln's life as a lawyer and has published several works on Lincoln.
