Apr 20, 2009 - NKU Chase 3L Shameka O'Neil accepted the Jack Sherman, Jr. Scholarship Saturday at the Seventeenth Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet held by the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati.

Ms. O'Neil earned her bachelor's degree cum laude in Political Science from the University of Kentucky. She is in her final year at Chase, where she serves as Secretary for the Black Law Students Association. She is also a member of the Legal Association of Women. Shameka has volunteered her time with numerous groups, including Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati, and Election Protection. She has worked for the Kentucky Attorney General's Office for two years and has also clerked at Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley. Upon graduation, she would like to continue serving as a public advocate.

The Jack Sherman Jr. scholarship was established in 2003 in honor of Judge Jack Sherman, Jr., who graduated from NKU Chase College of Law in 1969. Judge Sherman served fourteen years as United States Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio before his retirement in 2003. He also served as a faculty member at Chase from 1974 to 1981, teaching constitutional and criminal law. Judge Sherman's scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving minority NKU Chase student who is interested in public service and who embodies inclusiveness and a sense of justice.
