Jan 23, 2009 - Chase student Rob Vonckx obtained an acquittal today for a client charged with obstructing official business. Rob worked the case under the supervision of attorney Wende Cross through the Indigent Defense Clinic of the Ohio Justice & Policy Center.

According to Rob's client, while riding home in a cab, he was astonished when the cab driver suddenly sped away from a police car. After a high-speed chase, the driver finally stopped - but then pulled out a gun and ran away. Scared, the client also jumped out of the car and ran in the direction of the officers. The client had no drugs or weapons and he claimed to have answered the officers' questions to the best of his ability. Still, he was arrested for obstructing official business.

Rob's supervising attorney believes that his intense investigation made the difference in his client's case. Rob visited, photographed, and mapped the scene. He obtained all of the available police records. He thoroughly brainstormed the case, crafted a theory of defense, then tested and revised his theory in a mock trial. This top-notch advocacy persuaded the judge that the client was not guilty.
