Connecting with Chemistry: NKU Celebration of the
International Year of Chemistry

Activities to Celebrate IYC
National Chemistry Week Demonstrations to Local
Libraries
This year we will be conducting hands-on experiments
with P-12 students at several local libraries during National Chemistry
week. We plan to highlight IYC and conduct activities that show
the public the significance of analytical chemistry to this year's them
"Chemistry-Our Health, Our Future!" We will also promote
demonstrations related to energy and materials.
Sharing the Excitement of Research in Chemistry
The International Year of Chemistry 2011 is a celebration of
“chemistry-our life, our future.”
Chemistry research has been vital in meeting many world needs.
The complexity of tackling these endeavors often requires an
interdisciplinary approach, providing an exciting world of discovery
that inspires young researchers and advances exploration.
At Northern Kentucky University, undergraduates who conduct
interdisciplinary research not only gain a unique and valuable
educational experience but also make important and intriguing
discoveries.
To highlight this we are engaging pre-college students (sophomore and
juniors) with what chemistry research is a providing an opportunity for
these students to have hands-on experience with some of the "cool toys"
used in analytical chemistry. Students learn about what research
is like and how a research experience in chemistry is usual for a
variety of career paths they might be interested in.
Dr. Heather A. Bullen, associate professor of analytical chemistry at
Northern Kentucky University, will be giving a talk to promote the IYC
and how analytical chemistry plays an important role in science
discovery. This talk will be on December 8th at the Behringer-Crawford
Museum at 6 pm. This is part of a lecture series promoting by NKU
Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement.
