Overview

I have a broad interest in biology education, but my research currently focuses on genetics education, specifically understanding students’ misconceptions and improving instruction in genetics. With colleagues at the University of Cincinnati and the American Society of Human Genetics I have developed an instrument to assess basic genetics knowledge before and after an introductory course (see publications from 2008). I am continuing that work at Northern Kentucky University, refining the instrument and further investigating some specific genetics terms and concepts that seem to imede the learning process.

I am also working with the Society for Evolution Education and Sunrock Farm to develop an evolution education program. We are currently writing an NSF proposal and collecting informative data thanks to a seed grant from the NKU Research Foundation.

Students interested in working on research in these areas should contact me at bowlingb2@nku.edu or 572-5415.
