Koralewski, Pugh combine for 25 kills

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Kristin Koralewski and Maggie Pugh combined for 25 kills and a .480 hitting percentage Thursday night to lead Northern Kentucky University to a 30-21, 30-20, 30-17 win over Saint Joseph’s College in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Koralewski finished with 14 kills, 14 digs and a .394 hitting percentage for third-seeded NKU, which won its 12th consecutive match and improved to 22-8. Pugh added 11 kills in 17 attack attempts for a .647 hitting percentage.

Koralewski upped her season kills total to 548, and the senior outside hitter now has 1,474 kills in her career at NKU. She needs 53 kills to break the NKU single-season record of 600, which was set by Bethany Gastright in 2000.

Saint Joseph’s (12-22) jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the third game, but NKU used a 22-2 run to take a 29-14 advantage. Koralewski hammered down eight kills and finished with a .700 hitting percentage in the third game as the Norse eliminated the sixth-seeded Pumas.

Pugh converted four kills in the third stanza for the Norse, who hit .424 in the final game. Lynne Fischesser served up three of her match-high seven aces in the third game.

Liz Holmes added nine kills and seven digs for NKU, which finished with an 11-1 advantage in blocks. Andrea Lanham recorded 41 assists as the Norse hit .294 for the match.

NKU will meet second-seeded Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Friday in the GLVC Tournament semifinals. SIUE (24-6) defeated NKU in five games earlier this season at Highland Heights, Ky.

Top-seeded University of Southern Indiana (21-6) will meet fourth-seeded University of Indianapolis (23-12) in the other semifinal. The championship match will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The GLVC Tournament champion will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
