NKU TO HOST GLVC TOURNAMENT
Norse aim for seventh title in past nine years
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team will play host to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament this week, beginning Thursday (Nov. 13) and continuing through Saturday.
NKU, the No. 1 seed after finishing 13-2 in the GLVC, will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 8 seed University of Missouri-St. Louis (8-14) in Regents Hall. The Norse (23-10 overall), who have won six of the past eight GLVC Tournament championships, are 14-0 all-time against Missouri-St. Louis.
NKU defeated the Riverwomen in three games earlier this season in Regents Hall.
If NKU defeats Missouri-St. Louis, the Norse will face either fourth-seeded Quincy University (18-10) or fifth-seeded University of Southern Indiana (19-8) in the GLVC semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, the No. 2 seed, will meet seventh-seeded Lewis University in the first round Thursday afternoon. Third-seeded University of Indianapolis will meet sixth-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the other first-round match.
The GLVC championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. The GLVC Tournament winner will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
NKU features junior outside hitter Kristin Koralewski, who was named GLVC co-Player of the Week on Tuesday. Koralewski registered a .561 hitting percentage last week and upped her double-double count to 24 as NKU posted three-game sweeps over Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Koralewski totaled 24 kills and 19 digs in two matches as NKU clinched the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament. It is the third time this season that she was won or shared the GLVC Player of the Week honor.
For the season, Koralewski leads NKU in kills (496), digs (430) and hitting percentage (.340). She ranks No. 3 in the GLVC in kills per game (4.32) and No. 4 in hitting percentage.
NKU senior right-side hitter Cammi Welter enters the GLVC Tournament with 437 kills and 84 blocks this season. Welter ranks No. 5 on the NKU all-time list with 1,469 career kills.
Norse senior setter Sara Taylor, who recorded her 3,000th career assist on Saturday, averages 15.42 assists per game. NKU senior outside hitter Nicole Salisbury has 404 kills and 364 digs this season.
