EASTERN NEW MEXICO DEFEATS NKU, 5-1

Norse lose in NCAA II Midwest Regional championship match

 

EDMOND, Okla. - The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team captured the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament championship on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Northern Kentucky University.

Top-seeded ENMU improved to 16-4 with the win and advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships at Pensacola, Fla., May 11-14. NKU, the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional, finished the season with a 14-4 record.

Prior to Saturday, NKU was 14-0 against Division II competition this season. ENMU, however, jumped out to an early 2-1 lead by taking two of the three doubles matches on Saturday.

ENMU then captured the Midwest Regional title with singles wins by Layla Turner (No. 1), Julie Stiles (No. 2) and Sarah Pennington (No. 4).

Turner (ENM) defeated O’Hara, 6-3, 6-3.

Stiles (ENM) defeated Spears, 6-1, 6-0.

Pennington (ENM) defeated Chapman, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.

Stiles-Turner (ENM) defeated O’Hara-Ruehl, 8-1.

Pennington-Weinman (ENM) defeated Spears-Dausch, 8-2.

Chapman-McQueen (NKU) defeated Salazar-Wells, 8-4.

RECORDS: ENMU 16-4, NKU 14-4.
