NKU DEFEATS USI, 2-0, TO ADVANCE TO GLVC FINALS

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Jeanna Martin and Betsy Moore both scored first-half goals Saturday as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 2-0, in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Sophomore goalie Lauren Piening picked up her 14th shutout as NKU improved to 19-2 and advanced to Sunday’s 2 p.m. GLVC championship match against Southern Illinois at Edwardsville. SIUE, the No. 1 seed, defeated Indianapolis, 2-1, in the other GLVC semifinal on Saturday.

NKU, which dropped a 3-1 decision at SIUE earlier this season, is the defending GLVC Tournament champion. The Norse knocked off SIUE at Edwardsville, Ill., in last season’s GLVC Tournament semifinals en route to the GLVC title.

Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced on Monday. NKU is currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Region rankings, and the top two teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
