NKU WOMEN REPEAT AS GLVC SOCCER CHAMPIONS
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Lindsay Smith and Lori Kevill both scored goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Southern Illinois at Edwardsville, 2-0, in the championship match of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Sophomore goalie Lauren Piening recorded her 15th shutout of the season as NKU improved to 20-2 and won its second consecutive GLVC Tournament championship. The Norse, ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, also avenged a 3-1 loss to SIUE earlier this season.
Smith gave NKU a 1-0 lead five minutes into the match with a goal off an assist from Kevill. The Norse held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Kevill added a goal off an assist from Tricia Ruark at the 68:21 mark to give the Norse a 2-0 lead, and the NKU defense - which has not allowed a goal in its last seven matches - controlled SIUE (13-6) the rest of the way.
Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced on Monday. NKU is currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Region rankings, and the top two teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Norse are expected to be the No. 1 seed in the Central Region, and NKU could also be the host for a first-round NCAA Tournament match next weekend.
