NKU TO HOST HILLSDALE ON FRIDAY

Norse soccer teams to play non-GLVC doubleheader

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s and women’s soccer teams will play host to Hillsdale (Mich.) College in a doubleheader this Friday night, beginning with the women’s match at 7 p.m. at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

Following the women’s contest, the NKU men will play Hillsdale at 9 p.m. The Hillsdale women own a 3-4 record going into Friday, while the Hillsdale men are 0-7. Both Norse teams will also play at Saint Joseph’s College on Sunday, beginning with the women’s match at 1 p.m.

The NKU women are ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the second straight week. NKU, now 8-0 after posting a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten University of Indianapolis last Sunday, is 22-0-2 during its last 24 matches in the regular season.

The last team to defeat the Norse in a regular-season match was the University of Missouri-Rolla, which posted a 5-3 win against NKU on Aug. 27, 2000.

NKU junior Bessie Black continues to lead the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring with nine goals and 11 assists (29 points). NKU senior Jeanna Martin is No. 3 in the GLVC in scoring with eight goals and six assists (22 points), and Norse junior Kristen Noakes ranks No. 5 with eight goals and two assists (18 points).

As a team, NKU ranks No. 1 in scoring (6.1 goals per game) and No. 3 in defense (0.50 goals allowed per game).

The NKU men are 5-4 overall after posting a 4-3 win in double overtime against Indianapolis last Sunday. NKU is now in sole possession of first place in the GLVC with a 3-0 record.

Jeff Anderson’s goal with two minutes remaining in the second overtime Sunday gave NKU the victory. Anderson’s winning goal, which came at the 117:57 mark, was assisted by Eric Kleiman. Anderson drilled the winning shot past Indianapolis goalie Gabe Hall to keep NKU unbeaten in the GLVC.

Anderson ranks No. 11 in the GLVC in scoring with five goals and one assist (11 points). NKU junior Joaquin Palomeque ranks No. 5 in the GLVC with four assists. NKU freshman goalie Nate Madden owns a 2.21 goals against average and has two shutouts.
