Unbeaten NKU (8-0) to play key GLVC contests

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the second consecutive week, will travel to Quincy, Ill., this Friday for an 8:30 p.m. match against Quincy University.

NKU, which is 8-0 after posting a 3-0 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday, will also play a road contest at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The Norse are 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Quincy is 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the GLVC. SIUE is 3-2-2 overall, 0-0-2 in the GLVC.

NKU is now 31-0-2 in its last 33 matches against GLVC teams. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when SIUE posted a 3-1 win over NKU at Edwardsville, Ill.

Stephanie Sandfoss scored a goal and added an assist Sunday to lead NKU past Missouri-St. Louis. Sandfoss, a senior forward and a graduate of Highlands High School, leads NKU in scoring with five goals and six assists.

Aisling Callaghan and Kristen Noakes also added goals for NKU in the win over the Riverwomen. Amy Martini and Robyn Withers had assists for the Norse.

Callaghan ranks No. 2 on the team in scoring with six goals and two assists, while Noakes has four goals this season. Bessie Black is No. 3 on the team in scoring with three goals and three assists.

NKU goalie Megan Zalla has a 0.51 goals against average with 16 saves this season. Zalla, Sam Westerling and Jennie Ulrey combined for the shutout against Missouri-St. Louis.
