NKU to meet No. 1 Christian Brothers at 3 p.m. Sunday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, now 4-0 after posting a 2-1 win at Mercyhurst (Pa.) College on Sunday, will return home this weekend to play a pair of matches against nationally ranked opponents.

NKU, ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will meet 15th-ranked Tusculum (Tenn.) College (2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky. The Norse will also play host to the nation’s top-ranked team - Christian Brothers University - at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Christian Brothers - last year’s NCAA Division II national runner-up - is currently 3-0 and has outscored the opposition 32-0 in those three victories. The Buccaneers feature senior forward Missy Gregg, who has 13 goals this season. A year ago, Gregg set an NCAA single-season record by scoring 73 goals as Christian Brothers advanced to the NCAA Division II finals.

Freshman midfielder Laurel Chalk snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal at the 78:33 mark Sunday to give NKU a 2-1 victory at Mercyhurst. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Melissa Poliseno scored a goal off an assist from Cheryl Wright.

NKU tied the match at the 36:09 mark when Ashley McGuffey scored her first collegiate goal by blasting in a shot from 30 yards out after a corner kick by Carey Hebbeler.

The match remained tied until the 78:33 mark, when Stephanie Sandfoss placed the ball into the back post and Chalk finished the play with her first collegiate goal. Sandfoss, a graduate of Highlands High School, now has four assists this season. She leads NKU in scoring with 10 total points.

Senior forward Bessie Black has scored two goals and added an assist for NKU, and junior forward Aisling Callaghan has three goals and two assists. Senior forward/midfielder Kristen Noakes has two goals for the Norse.

NKU has outscored the opposition 15-3 this season. Sandfoss ranks No. 3 in the GLVC in scoring with 2.5 ppg. Goalie Megan Zalla is No. 3 in the GLVC with a 0.43 goals against average.
