HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team, ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the fifth consecutive week, will hit the road Friday for a 2:30 p.m. match at the University of Indianapolis. NKU, now 13-0-1 overall after a 2-0 win over Saint Josephs College last Sunday, is 6-0-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are closing in on the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament, which begins Nov. 3 at the four highest seeds. NKU is 35-0-3 in its last 38 matches against GLVC teams. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU. NKU owns victories against three teams - No. 2 Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University, No. 16 Tusculum (Tenn.) College and No. 23 Mercyhurst College - currently ranked in this weeks national poll. Stephanie Sandfoss - named GLVC Player of the Week on Tuesday - and Michelle Kelly scored first-half goals on Sunday to lead NKU past Saint Josephs. The NKU defense picked up its fourth consecutive shutout and controlled the entire match. Sandfoss, a senior forward and a graduate of Highlands High School, scored two game-winning goals last week. She scored a goal with 55 seconds remaining in the second overtime Friday to give the Norse a 1-0 victory at Hillsdale (Mich.) College. On Sunday, she scored a goal 15 minutes into the match as NKU defeated Saint Josephs. It marked the second time this season that Sandfoss - who leads the GLVC with nine goals - has been named GLVC Player of the Week. |
