NKU LOOKS TO CLINCH NO. 1 SEED

Norse can clinch GLVC’s top seed with win at UM-St. Louis

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, unbeaten and ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the fourth consecutive week, can wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a road win at the University of Missouri-St. Louis this Friday at 6 p.m.

If the Norse defeat the Riverwomen, NKU will host the GLVC semifinals and finals (which will be held Nov. 3-4). NKU is 14-0 overall, 8-0 in the GLVC.

The 14-0 start is the best in the five-year history of the NKU women’s soccer program.

Bessie Black scored three goals Sunday afternoon as NKU defeated Quincy (Ill.) University, 7-1, at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky. It marked the third time this season that Black - who leads the GLVC in scoring with 17 goals and 13 assists - has scored three goals in a match. Tricia Ruark added two goals and two assists for the Norse.

The Norse are 28-0-2 during their last 30 matches in the regular season. The last team to defeat the Norse in a regular-season match was the University of Missouri-Rolla, which posted a 5-3 win against NKU on Aug. 27, 2000.

The NKU men’s soccer team is now 8-7 overall (5-3 in the GLVC) after rallying to defeat Quincy, 2-1, last Sunday. The Norse, in fourth place in the GLVC standings, can clinch a first-round home match in the GLVC Tournament with a win at Missouri-St. Louis this Friday night.

Jeff Anderson and Kevin Morath both scored goals in the second half Sunday afternoon to lead NKU past Quincy in a key GLVC contest. Quincy took a 1-0 lead at the 18:24 mark when Matt Spector headed in a ball off a Joe Schiro corner kick. The Hawks held the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Anderson tied the match at 1-1 with a goal at the 60:00 mark, and Morath scored off an assist from Mike Poole at the 65:12 mark to give the Norse a 2-1 lead.

Anderson leads NKU in scoring with six goals and four assists.
