No. 1 Norse (16-0-2) finish regular season unbeaten

WILDER, Ky. - Stephanie Sandfoss scored two goals Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Bessie Black assisted both goals as NKU - ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll for the seventh consecutive week - improved to 16-0-2 overall and finished the regular season unbeaten for the first time in the six-year history of the program.

Sandfoss, a graduate of Highlands High School who leads the Great Lakes Valley Conference with 13 goals, gave the Norse a 1-0 lead just one minute into the match by finishing off a rebound shot after a nice pass from Black. She sealed the victory at the 48:08 mark by taking another pass from Black and beating WVWC goalie Krystal Savarino to give the Norse a 2-0 lead.

The NKU defense held WVWC (11-6-1) to just three shots, and Norse goalies Megan Zalla, Jennie Ulrey and Sam Westerling combined for the shutout. NKU attempted a total of 18 shots and also had nine corner kicks.

The Norse are the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will host a first-round match at noon Sunday against No. 8 seed University of Indianapolis. If the Norse win their first-round match, the GLVC semifinals and championship will also be hosted at the Town & Country Sports Complex Nov. 8 and Nov. 10.

The times for the semifinals on Nov. 8 will be 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with NKU playing in the late contest. The GLVC championship will be played at noon on Nov. 10. NKU has never lost (10-0 all-time) in the GLVC Tournament.

NKU is 37-0-4 in its last 41 matches against GLVC teams. The Norse have not lost to a GLVC opponent since Oct. 9, 1999, when Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville posted a 3-1 win over NKU.
