Norse advance to NCAA quarterfinals |

WILDER, Ky. - Betsy Moore and Bessie Black scored two goals apiece Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated the University of Minnesota-Duluth, 6-2, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Moore, a graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, opened the scoring for NKU just 11 minutes into the match with a breakaway goal. Black, a graduate of Scott High School, made it 2-0 five minutes later with a goal off an assist from Moore. NKU took a 3-0 lead when Moore scored on a penalty kick, and the Norse held a 3-0 halftime advantage. Tricia Ruark extended NKUs lead to 4-0 early in the second half with a goal off an assist from Denise Kunz. Minnesota-Duluths Jenny Warrick scored at the 65:16 mark off an assist from Cathy Wallace to cut the deficit to 4-1, but Black answered with another goal for NKU to make it 5-1. NKU scored all six of its goals against Minnesota-Duluth goalie Michele Filipczak, who entered Saturdays NCAA Tournament with a 0.16 goals against average. Prior to Saturday, Filipczak was on the verge of setting an NCAA record for goals against average in a season. NKU, ranked No. 4 nationally in the Division II poll, improved to 19-1-2 with the win. Minnesota-Duluth ended the season with a 17-2-2 record. NKU advances to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and will play either Mercyhurst (Pa.) or Ashland next week at a site to be determined.
