ERIE, Pa. - Betsy Moore and Stephanie Sandfoss scored first-half goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University womens soccer team defeated Mercyhurst (Pa.) College, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Tricia Ruark and Robyn Withers assisted the two goals as third-seeded NKU (21-1) won the NCAA II Great Lakes Region title with a victory over top-seeded Mercyhurst (15-3-1). The Norse took a 1-0 lead at the 30:39 mark when Sandfoss beat Mercyhurst goalie Meghan Frey for a goal that was assisted by Ruark. NKU extended the lead to 2-0 at the 43:30 mark when Moore tallied her 16th goal of the season off an assist from Withers. Mercyhurst cut the lead to 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but the Norse defense toughened and shut down the Lakers the remainder of the match. It marked the third consecutive season that NKU has defeated Mercyhurst in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Two weeks ago, Mercyhurst had posted a 1-0 victory over NKU at Wilder, Ky. NKU will travel to Kirksville, Mo., to meet Truman State University (18-2) - which won the Central Region championship - on Nov. 17 in an NCAA Division II Elite Eight matchup. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II Final Four. NKU is seeking its third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four.
