Norse women ink four prep standouts

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The following individuals have signed national letters of intent to attend Northern Kentucky University and play women’s soccer next fall:

•Shirley Ernst, a four-year letterwinner at Roger Bacon High School. Ernst earned second team All-Girls’ Greater Cincinnati League honors last fall, and she also was named second tam All-City.

•Katie Kugele, the all-time leading scorer for Franklin County (Ind.) High School. Kugele finished her career with 72 goals and led Franklin County to the 2002 regional championship. Kugele also earned All-Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference honors four consecutive years.

•Samantha Riley, who earned Fort Ancient Valley Conference Player of the Year honors last fall for Glen Este High School. Riley also was named third team All-State in Ohio and led Glen Este to the FAVC championship. She will also play basketball at NKU.

•Krista Rogers, who earned second team All-FAVC honors at Mason (Ohio) High School last season. Rogers earned three letters for the Comets and scored two goals as a senior.

Those recruits will join an NKU women’s soccer program that posted a 20-1-2 overall record last season. The Norse - who captured their fifth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference title in 2002 - were ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II most of the season before losing to the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the national quarterfinals.
