Norse to meet Saginaw Valley State at 8 p.m.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will begin the 2002 season this Friday night at 8 p.m. against Saginaw Valley State University at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU is ranked No. 3 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II preseason poll. The Norse, who posted a 22-2 record last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third straight year, return six starters and 11 letterwinners.

NKU, which has won four consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championships, will also meet the University of Findlay at noon on Sunday.

Senior forward Bessie Black, who scored 21 goals and added 15 assists last season, is NKU’s top returning player. Black was named first team All-GLVC and first team All-Region a year ago.

NKU must replace three-time All-American Betsy Moore, who finished her career as the Norse’s all-time scoring leader. Moore was also named the GLVC Player of the Year last season.

Saginaw Valley State posted a 3-14-1 record last season. NKU met Saginaw Valley State a year ago, and the Norse defeated the Cardinals, 4-0, at University Center, Mich.

NKU leads the all-time series with Saginaw Valley State, 2-0.
