NKU HITS THE ROAD TO START SEASON

Norse face Northwood (Mich.) at 4 p.m. Friday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will open the 2001 season this Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Norse face Northwood (Mich.) University at University Center, Mich.

NKU, which is ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, will also meet Saginaw Valley State University at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to conclude its Michigan road trip.

NKU (21-2-2, NCAA II national runner-up a year ago) returns nine starters, including seven seniors who have been in the lineup for three years. NKU is looking for its fourth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championship and third straight berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four.

NKU was 1-0-1 against a pair of Division I schools in two exhibition matches last week. Betsy Moore scored a goal at the 60:28 mark last Sunday as NKU tied Xavier University, 1-1, at the Town & Country Sports Complex. NKU also defeated Ohio University, 2-0, last Friday at Athens, Ohio.

Moore, a senior forward and a graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, enters her final season as NKU’s all-time career leader in goals with 52. She also ranks No. 2 in school history with 31 assists.

This will be the first time NKU has met Northwood in women’s soccer. NKU posted a 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State during the 1999 season in the only meeting between the two schools.

Northwood posted a 7-9-1 record last season. Saginaw Valley State finished the 2000 campaign with a 7-6-1 record.
