Cottrell gets double-double as Norse open season with a win |

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Michelle Cottrell scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Tuesday night as the Northern Kentucky University womens basketball team defeated Georgetown (Ky.) College, 70-54, in Regents Hall. Bridget Flanagan added 15 points as the Norse (1-0) opened the season with a victory. NKU held Georgetown (3-2) to just 26.9 percent shooting from the field (7 of 26) in the second half to break open a close game. NKU used a 12-3 run to extend a 37-36 lead to 49-39 with 7:34 remaining. Suzie Smith scored six points during the NKU spurt. Cottrell, last seasons Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year, now has 1,737 career points. She needs just 147 points to pass Peggy Vincent (1,883 points) and become NKUs all-time career scoring leader. NKU made 52.3 percent of its shots from the field and won the rebounding battle by a 34-29 margin. NKU will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (Nov. 24) with a 2 p.m. road game at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. The Norse will also travel to Kenosha, Wis., on Monday (Nov. 26) to meet the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 6:30 p.m.
