INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Michelle Cottrell scored 15 points Saturday night as the Northern Kentucky University womens basketball team defeated the University of Indianapolis, 56-52, at Nicoson Hall. Cottrell, who missed six games with a stress fracture in her right foot, gave NKU a 53-52 lead with 1:52 remaining by making a layup while being fouled and converting the free throw. Suzie Smith hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to give the Norse a 55-52 lead, and Jessica Brock blocked Amanda Davidsons three-point attempt in the closing seconds to preserve the victory. Amy Mobley converted a free throw with six seconds remaining to give the Norse a 56-52 advantage. NKU, which trailed 26-21 at halftime, shot 48 percent from the field in the second half to rally for the win. Dana Schubeler added 12 points and 10 rebounds for NKU, which improved to 18-4 overall, 14-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Cottrell, who made all four of her shots from the field Saturday, needs just five points to reach the 2,000-point plateau. She is NKUs all-time leading scorer with 1,995 points. NKU has now won 14 consecutive games against Indianapolis. The last time Indianapolis defeated NKU was during the 1995-96 season at Nicoson Hall, when the Greyhounds pulled out a 74-64 victory against the Norse. |
