LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Princess Wimsatt scored 19 points and dished out six assists Thursday as Bellarmine University posted a 74-65 win over Northern Kentucky University in Knights Hall. Lynne Johnson added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Bellarmine (19-7 overall, 15-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Shanta Bowens finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Knights. In the first half, NKU held a 18-13 lead with 6:23 left. Bellarmine, however, closed the half with an 18-8 run to take a 31-26 halftime advantage. In the second half, Bellarmine jumped out to a 15-point advantage and never trailed. The Knights made 12 of their 15 free throws in the second half to seal the win. NKU was held to 4-of-21 shooting from three-point range and also committed 19 turnovers. We have to shoot the ball better from the perimeter, said NKU head coach Nancy Winstel. We are being aggressive on the perimeter, and sooner or later those shots are going to fall. Bellarmine also shot 76.2 percent from the free throw line, compared to NKUs 50 percent shooting (9-for-18) at the stripe. The Norse were led by Connie Myers, who scored a game-high 27 points. She also added nine rebounds for NKU. Connie Myers played great for us tonight. She had been off and on for us and we needed her to have a good game. We need another post player to step up, though, said Winstel. Sharell Snardon also added seven points and 12 rebounds for NKU, which fell to 16-9 overall, 11-8 in the GLVC. We showed some courage and emotion. We competed hard, but we need to compete hard enough to win the game, Winstel said. The Norse finish up the regular season Saturday with a 2:15 p.m. game at Kentucky Wesleyan College. |
