NKU POSTS 79-63 WIN OVER QUINCY |

Cottrell scores 19 points as Norse improve to 23-3 |

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Michelle Cottrell scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University womens basketball team defeated Quincy (Ill.) University, 79-63, in Regents Hall. NKU used a 16-2 run to begin the second half to build a 51-35 lead. Cottrell and Michele Tuchfarber both scored 10 points in the second half to lead the Norse. Tuchfarber finished with 15 points. Quincy connected on seven of eight three-point attempts (87.5 percent) in the first half to trail by just two points (35-33). The Hawks also held a 21-10 rebound advantage at halftime, but the Norse shot 56.7 percent from the field in the second half to roll to the victory. Quincy missed all seven of its three-point attempts in the second half, and the Lady Hawks committed 27 turnovers in the game. Heather Livingstone added 11 points and seven assists as NKU (23-3, 17-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) extended its Regents Hall winning streak to 25 consecutive games. The Norse have not lost at home since Jan. 8, 2000, when Bellarmine posted a 76-72 victory over NKU. NKU also clinched a tie for first place in the GLVC standings with the University of Southern Indiana. The Lady Eagles (23-3, 17-3 GLVC) won the coin flip and will be the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament. NKU is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Quincy at 9:30 p.m. (EST) this Wednesday (Feb. 28) at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind. Julie Cowens scored 12 points for NKU, which is ranked No. 8 nationally in the Division II poll. The Norse are ranked No. 2 in the latest Great Lakes Region poll. Michigan Tech is ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region. NKU is the two-time defending champion of the GLVC Tournament. |
