LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Nickie Randall scored four points in the final 45 seconds Saturday night as the Bellarmine University womens basketball team rallied to defeat Northern Kentucky University, 78-75, in a battle of teams ranked in the Division II top 25 poll. Randall hit a 10-foot jump shot with 45 seconds remaining to give 20th-ranked Bellarmine (19-5, 14-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) a 76-75 lead. She later made two free throws with 15 seconds left to give the Knights a 78-75 advantage. NKU - ranked No. 6 nationally - had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Bridget Flanagans three-point attempt was off target and Bellarmine snapped the Norses seven-game winning streak. NKU (21-3, 15-3 GLVC) built a 46-33 halftime lead behind the play of Michelle Cottrell, who scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half. Bellarmine switched to a zone defense in the second half, but NKU made just three of 17 three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes. For the game, NKU made seven of 27 three-point attempts. The 27 three-point attempts set an NKU single-game record. Cottrell now has 1,605 career points, which ranks No. 2 in school history. She also finished with 13 rebounds Saturday, giving her 35 double-doubles in her career. |
