ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Tracy Buchholz scored 21 points and hit five three-point baskets Thursday night as the Lewis University womens basketball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 87-74, at Neil Carey Arena. Darcee Schmidt added 18 points for Lewis, which snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Norse as they improved to 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. It was the first win for the Flyers against the Norse since their 58-40 win in 1998. Lewis entered halftime with a 40-37 lead as they forced NKU to 10 turnovers. Buchholz made three of her four three-point shots to lead the Flyers with 13 points at the break. In the second half, Lewis came out hot hitting 53.3 percent of their shots. They opened the half on a 13-2 scoring run, capped by a layup by Shante Glenn to increase their lead to 14. The Norse cut the lead under double-digits only once, 78-69, with a layup by Elizabeth Burrows, but NKU could never get any closer. This league (GLVC) is real tough this year, said NKU head coach Nancy Winstel. If you are going to win, you are going to have to earn it. NKU was led by Sharell Snardon who scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jessica Brock also added 18 points and seven rebounds as the Norse fell to 3-3 overall, 1-2 in the GLVC. Shante Glenn posted 14 points and six assists for the Flyers. Connie Myers added 11 points for the Norse. Nikki Perkins also contributed nine points and eight assists for NKU. The Norse will conclude the two-game GLVC road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. |
