Norse (8-2) suffer second straight loss |

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Debbie Killips scored 18 points and hit the go-ahead basket with less than a minute remaining Saturday afternoon as the Ferris State University womens basketball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 70-65, at the Jim Wink Arena. Killips basket gave Ferris State a 65-63 lead with 54 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs (6-3) then made five free throws in the final 32 seconds to hand NKU (8-2) its second consecutive defeat. The Norse - ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - also suffered a 64-51 loss to Delta State University on Dec. 21 after starting the season 8-0. NKU had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Suzie Smiths three-point attempt was off target. Lucy DeMartin then made a pair of free throws to give the Bulldogs a 70-65 lead, and Ferris State defeated NKU for the first time in five meetings. NKUs Michelle Cottrell picked up her 43rd career double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Norse, however, made just 35.3 percent of their shots from the field. Smith scored 12 points for NKU, and Bridget Flanagan finished with 10 points. NKU will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday night with an 6:15 p.m. game at Quincy (Ill.) University. |
