NKU ADVANCES TO GLVC CHAMPIONSHIP

 

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Bethany Gastright had 19 kills and 13 digs Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team defeated Southern Illinois at Edwardsville, 15-1, 9-15, 15-1, 15-7, in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Regents Hall.

Gastright, a sophomore outside hitter, also had a .326 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Jenny Jeremiah added 17 kills and 20 digs as NKU improved to 29-1 with the victory and extended its winning streak to 22 consecutive matches.

The Norse will meet Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne, which defeated Bellarmine in the other semifinal on Friday, at 2 p.m. Saturday for the GLVC championship. NKU is shooting for its third consecutive GLVC championship.

Junior setter Bobbi Casey picked up 47 assists and three service aces, and junior middle hitter Jessica Buroker added 12 kills and 12 digs.

NKU has now won 50 consecutive matches against GLVC opponents in Regents Hall dating back to Sept. 3, 1995, when Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne defeated NKU in five games.

The victory extended NKU’s overall homecourt winning streak to 31 consecutive matches, which dates back to 1997. The last team to beat NKU in Regents Hall was the University of New Haven, which knocked off the Norse in four games on Nov. 9, 1997.
