NKU’s GLVC win streak stopped at 40

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Sarah Welles had eight kills and seven blocks Saturday afternoon as the Lewis University volleyball team upset 11th-ranked Northern Kentucky University, 15-5, 15-12, 15-5, halting the Norse’s Great Lakes Valley Conference winning streak at 40.

Lewis (11-7, 3-3 GLVC) won the first game, 15-5, by hitting .415 (19 kills, 41 attempts, two errors). The Flyers pulled out the second game 15-12 with a .306 hitting percentage, and Lewis won the match by a 15-5 score in the third game as NKU converted just five kills in 27 attempts with nine errors.

Junior outside hitter Bethany Gastright led NKU (12-3, 6-1 GLVC) with 13 kills, and freshman outside hitter Camilla Welter had 11 kills and a .318 hitting percentage.

NKU, ranked No. 11 nationally in the Division II poll, had 40 consecutive victories against GLVC opponents until Saturday’s loss. Prior to Saturday, the last time NKU lost to a GLVC opponent was on the road at Southern Illinois at Edwardsville on Sept. 25, 1998, when the Cougars defeated the Norse in five games.

The Norse had beaten Lewis 12 consecutive times prior to Saturday. The last time NKU had lost to Lewis was during the 1992 season, when the Flyers knocked off the Norse in five games.
