GVSU DEFEATS NKU IN NCAAs

Norse finish season with 27-7 record

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Kathy Vis had 33 kills, 17 digs and six blocks Friday night as the Grand Valley State University volleyball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 15-10, 8-15, 15-7, 17-19, 15-5, in the semifinals of the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament at Grand Valley State. NKU, which finished 27-7, was led by Jessica Buroker’s 19 kills and .471 hitting percentage. Bethany Gastright added 18 kills and 25 digs, and setter Bobbi Casey had 62 assists and eight digs. It was the final match for NKU head coach Mary Biermann, who is retiring from coaching. Biermann finished her 12-year career at NKU with a record of 286-106. She also guided NKU to five Great Lakes Valley Conference championships, and last season NKU advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the first time in school history.
