Norse advance to meet top-seeded Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Junior outside hitter Bethany Gastright had 26 kills and nine digs Thursday night as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team defeated Northern Michigan University, 18-16, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, in the first round of the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament at Grand Valley State University.

Freshman outside hitter Camilla Welter added 16 kills for NKU, which is ranked No. 18 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Senior middle hitter Jessica Buroker had 14 kills, 16 digs, four service aces and a .324 hitting percentage as the Norse improved to 27-6.

Junior middle hitter Julie Hathorn had 13 kills and four service aces for NKU, which defeated Northern Michigan (18-12) for the second time this season. Senior setter Bobbi Casey had a triple-double for NKU with 10 kills, 12 digs and 59 assists.

NKU advances to Friday night’s regional semifinals, where the No. 4 seed Norse will meet No. 1 seed Grand Valley State at 7:30 p.m. NKU met Grand Valley State earlier this season on a neutral floor and lost to the Lakers in four games.

The winner of Friday night’s contest will advance to the regional championship, which will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday.
