Top-seeded Lakers end Norse’s season in NCAA II regional semifinals

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Carly Miller had 26 kills and .431 hitting percentage Friday night as the Grand Valley State University volleyball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 19-30, 30-24, 30-25, 30-21, in the semifinals of the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament.

Chara Fehsenfeld added 19 kills and a .350 hitting percentage as top-seeded Grand Valley State (27-4) ended NKU’s win streak at 24 consecutive matches. The Norse, who had not lost since a Sept. 8 setback to Northern Michigan University, finished the season 28-5.

NKU started strong on Friday, holding Grand Valley State to a .050 hitting percentage en route to a 30-19 win in the first game. The Lakers fought back, though, and hit .326 in the second game to even the match at 1-1. Grand Valley State won the third game, 30-25, by holding NKU to a .186 hitting percentage.

The Lakers hit .645 in the fourth game (21 kills and just one error in 31 attempts) to win the match. It marked the second consecutive season that Grand Valley State has eliminated NKU from the NCAA Tournament, and the Lakers have now won 30 straight home matches dating back to last year.

NKU was led by Bethany Gastright’s 15 kills and three service aces. Julie Hathorn added nine kills and a .286 hitting percentage, while Sara Taylor had 36 assists and two service aces.

Grand Valley State advances to the NCAA II Great Lakes Region finals against the University of Findlay - which defeated Northwood (Mich.) University in five games Friday - at 7 p.m. Saturday.
