Norse to meet top-seeded Lewis in semifinals

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Kristin Koralewski recorded 15 kills, 10 digs and a .355 hitting percentage Thursday night as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 30-27, 30-27, 30-20, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Koralewski, a sophomore outside hitter, converted 15 of 31 attack attempts as fourth-seeded NKU - which has won five consecutive GLVC championships - improved to 21-9. Wisconsin-Parkside, the No. 5 seed, finished the season with a 16-11 record.

Nicole Salisbury added 10 kills and 13 digs for the Norse, who are 16-0 all-time against the Rangers. Cammi Welter added 10 kills - including her 1,000th career kill - and eight digs for NKU.

Sara Taylor finished with 42 assists and nine digs for NKU, which hit .262 as a team and held Wisconsin-Parkside to just a .129 hitting percentage. The Norse will meet top-seeded Lewis University - which defeated Saint Joseph’s College in the first round - Friday night at 8 p.m. in the GLVC semifinals.

NKU and Lewis (25-3 overall record) split in the regular season, with the visitor winning each time. The Norse have won nine of their last 10 matches against Lewis on the Flyers’ home floor.

NKU has won 16 consecutive matches in the GLVC Tournament. The Norse have not lost in the GLVC Tournament since Nov. 16, 1996, when Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne posted a 15-12, 14-16, 15-12, 15-13 win over NKU in the championship match at Fort Wayne, Ind.

The winner of the GLVC Tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. NKU owns a total of seven GLVC championships (1985, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001).
