GASTRIGHT NAMED GLVC’S BEST

Norse senior earns GLVC Player of the Year honor

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Bethany Gastright has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year by the league’s volleyball coaches.

Gastright, a senior outside hitter and a graduate of Holy Cross High School, became NKU’s all-time career leader in kills this season and led the Norse to a fifth consecutive GLVC championship. Gastright had 20 kills and a .462 hitting percentage Saturday afternoon as NKU defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 30-17, 30-26, 30-24, in the championship match of the GLVC Tournament in Regents Hall.

Gastright leads NKU in kills (517) and service aces (55), and she has a .305 hitting percentage entering the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Three other NKU players - sophomore setter Sara Taylor, senior right-side hitter Luisa Gomez, and freshman defensive specialist Amber Timmons - earned second team All-GLVC honors.

NKU’s Carlos Chia, who has led the Norse to a 27-4 record and 23 consecutive victories entering the NCAA Division II Tournament, was named GLVC Coach of the Year.

Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced Sunday night, and the Great Lakes Regional is expected to be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

Grand Valley State (26-4) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Great Lakes Region poll, and the Lakers own a 3-0 victory over NKU in Regents Hall earlier this season.
