NKU OPENS SEASON WITH WIN AT BELLARMINE
Buroker sets NKU record for career block assists
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior middle hitter Jessica Buroker had seven kills and three block assists Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team opened the season with a 15-12, 15-7, 15-8 victory over Bellarmine University.
Buroker became NKUs all-time career leader in block assists by recording three against Bellarmine. Buroker now has 279 block assists, two more than previous career leader Prudi Downs (277 block assists from 1985-88).
Junior right-side hitter Denise Barhorst had five blocks for the Norse, and junior outside hitter Bethany Gastright recorded seven kills and three service aces. Freshman Camilla Welter collected eight digs and eight kills for NKU.
NKU now owns 34 consecutive victories against GLVC opponents. The last time NKU lost to a GLVC opponent was on the road at Southern Illinois at Edwardsville on Sept. 25, 1998, when the Cougars defeated the Norse in five games.
NKU will return home this Tuesday (Aug. 29) and play host to NAIA powerhouse Georgetown (Ky.) College, which posted a 40-5 record and advanced to the NAIA Elite Eight last season. The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Regents Hall.
