GVSU POSTS 4-0 WIN OVER NKU

Mackson throws one-hitter to lead top-seeded Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Sara Vroegindewey hit a two-run homer in the first inning Thursday as the Grand Valley State University softball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament.

Jennifer Mackson limited fifth-seeded NKU (36-16) to just one hit and recorded seven strikeouts as top-seeded Grand Valley State improved to 47-4. NKU starter Emily Breitholle allowed two earned runs in five innings and had four strikeouts, but Vroegindewey’s two-run homer proved to be more than enough for Mackson.

A year ago, Mackson also hurled a one-hit shutout against NKU in the NCAA Tournament at Edwardsville, Ill. The only hit Mackson surrendered Thursday was a single to Megan Owens.

Mackson, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, is now 26-2 this season.

NKU - which posted an 11-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round Thursday - will meet sixth-seeded Ashland University at 12:30 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. NKU played Ashland three times in the regular season, and the Norse defeated the Eagles twice.

The NKU/Ashland winner will advance to play at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the double-elimination tournament.
