Norse travel to Battle Creek, Mich., this weekend

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball team will travel to Battle Creek, Mich., this weekend to meet several of the nation’s top squads at the Great Lakes Region Showdown.

NKU, winner of nine consecutive games and 22-9 overall, will play Grand Valley State University (26-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the opening game. The Lakers are ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region.

The Norse will also play Mercyhurst (Pa.) College (3-20-1) at 1 p.m. and 20th-ranked Wayne (Mich.) State University (21-6-1) at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, NKU will close out the event with games against Gannon (Pa.) University (14-10) and 15th-ranked Ashland University (27-6).

NKU PLAYERS HONORED: NKU softball players Stephanie Leimbach and Krystal Lewallen have each received weekly honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Leimbach has been named GLVC Player of the Week, while Lewallen is the GLVC Pitcher of the Week. That duo led NKU to an 8-0 record last week and helped the Norse record GLVC doubleheader sweeps against Bellarmine University, the University of Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Leimbach, a sophomore center fielder, batted .583 and scored nine runs last week. Leimbach collected three hits in a game three times in the Norse’s eight wins, and she had a triple and a home run during a 9-0 win over Kentucky State.

She also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in a 2-0 win over Southern Indiana on Saturday. Leimbach also added four stolen bases last week and was 14-for-24 (.583) at the plate.

Lewallen hurled a perfect game last Sunday as NKU defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, 8-0, to complete a doubleheader sweep at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field. Lewallen recorded 12 strikeouts as NKU won its ninth consecutive game.

In three starts last week, Lewallen posted a 3-0 record with 34 strikeouts and a 0.37 earned run average. She is now 11-4 this season with a 0.60 ERA and 120 strikeouts.

NKU TOPS GLVC IN PITCHING: Lewallen is No. 1 in the GLVC in both ERA and strikeouts. NKU sophomore Emily Breitholle owns a 7-4 record and ranks 10th in the GLVC with a 1.59 ERA.

Breitholle leads the GLVC with six shutouts, and Lewallen ranks No. 2 with five. That duo has helped NKU jump to No. 1 in the GLVC in ERA at 1.14.

LINDEMAN NO. 4 IN RBI: NKU sophomore first baseman Angie Lindeman is No. 4 in the GLVC in runs batted in with 22. Lindeman is batting .319 with seven doubles this season.
