Norse own 19-1 record entering GLVC play

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball team will play host to Lewis University at noon this Saturday in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

The Norse will also meet the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at noon Sunday in a GLVC doubleheader. NKU owns a 19-1 record - the best start in the history of the program - going into GLVC play.

The Norse started the season with 18 consecutive victories. NKU’s only defeat is to the University of Nebraska-Omaha by a 2-0 score.

NKU’s Krystal Lewallen has been named the GLVC Pitcher of the Week. Lewallen, a sophomore from Crestwood, Ky., posted a 7-1 record with 75 strikeouts and a 0.12 earned run average last week during NKU’s spring trip in Florida.

She gave up just one earned run in 54 2/3 innings pitched and narrowly missed a pair of perfect games for the Norse.

A graduate of South Oldham High School, Lewallen owns a 10-1 record this season with 106 strikeouts. A year ago, she posted a 16-9 record with a 0.82 ERA.

NKU sophomore second baseman Ricki Rothbauer leads the team in hitting with a .437 batting average. Rothbauer also has a team-leading five triples, and she ranks No. 1 on the squad with 14 runs batted in.

In addition, Rothbauer has five doubles and a team-best 31 total hits. Rothbauer, a transfer from Ohio University in her first season with the Norse, is a native of Louisville, Ky., and she is a 2002 graduate of DuPont Manual High School.

Junior center fielder Stephanie Leimbach is batting .375 with 13 runs scored and nine RBI. Junior first baseman Angie Lindeman ranks No. 2 on the team with 13 RBI.

Junior pitcher Emily Breitholle owns a 6-0 record with a 0.92 ERA. Breitholle also has 44 strikeouts.
