NKU SWEEPS TWO FROM OHIO DOMINICAN

No. 8 Norse improve to 25-1 with doubleheader sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Emily Breitholle hurled a three-hit shutout Wednesday as the Northern Kentucky University softball team defeated Ohio Dominican University, 3-0, to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Breitholle finished with eight strikeouts and improved her record to 8-0 for NKU (25-1), which is ranked No. 8 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Becky Napier hit a solo home run for the Norse, while teammate Rachele Vogelpohl added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to provide NKU with a pair of insurance runs.

Vogelpohl, a graduate of Holy Cross High School, leads NKU with three home runs this season. She also has 13 runs batted in this spring.

In the opener, Heather Cotner had a triple and three RBI as NKU posted a 4-1 victory. Megan Owens was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Norse, while Ricki Rothbauer and Stephanie Leimbach each added two hits.

NKU’s Sara Newland allowed just seven hits and one run en route to the complete-game victory. Newland is now 4-0 this season.

The Norse will play in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge at Peoria, Ill., beginning at 8 p.m. Friday with a game against Gannon (Pa.) University. NKU will meet 14th-ranked Grand Valley State University at 8 a.m. on Saturday in a battle of nationally rated teams.

NKU will also meet Wayne (Mich.) State University and the University of Findlay on Saturday. The Norse will conclude the tournament on Sunday with a game against Ashland University.
