Norse pitcher named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player of the Week

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Krystal Lewallen has been named the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Week.

Lewallen, a sophomore from Crestwood, Ky., picked up four wins at the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge last weekend, and she also became the Norse’s all-time career strikeout leader during a victory against 14th-ranked Grand Valley State University.

Lewallen struck out 11 Grand Valley State batters during a 2-0 win last Saturday to pass Kim Bina on NKU’s career strikeout list. Lewallen limited Grand Valley State to just four hits and earned the complete-game victory. Lewallen also picked up wins against Wayne State (Mich.) University and Ashland University over the weekend and is currently 18-1 this season.

Lewallen, a graduate of South Oldham High School who now has 343 career strikeouts, also has 10 shutouts this season and is looking to became just the second pitcher in NKU history to record a 20-win season.

For the week, Lewallen was 4-0 with a 0.00 earned run average. In 22 innings, she gave up six hits, no runs and had 25 strikeouts.

NKU is ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll. If the Norse remain atop those rankings, they will play host to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament in May.
