LEWALLEN FINISHES NO. 1 NATIONALLY IN ERA

NKU sophomore pitcher leads nation in earned run average at 0.27

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University pitcher Krystal Lewallen has finished No. 1 nationally in earned run average in the NCAA Division II softball statistics.

Lewallen, a native of Crestwood, Ky., closed out the 2004 season with a 0.27 ERA to finish No. 1 nationally in that category. The sophomore pitcher won a school-record 31 games this spring and led NKU to the NCAA Division II World Series for the first time in the program’s history.

Lewallen edged Kelley Tiesi (0.35 ERA) of Shippensburg University for the ERA title in Division II. Lewallen is the first NKU pitcher to ever lead the nation in ERA.

A graduate of South Oldham High School, Lewallen allowed just 10 earned runs in 255 1/3 innings on the mound this spring. She also tossed a school-record 18 shutouts this season.

Lewallen also finished 20th nationally in strikeouts (8.5 strikeouts per seven innings) and sixth in victories (31).
