Norse open season Aug. 28 against Saginaw Valley State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team will open the season Aug. 28 against Saginaw Valley State University at 2 p.m. at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU, led by second-year head coach John Basalyga, will play host to 2003 NCAA Division II Final Four participant University of Findlay the following afternoon (Aug. 29) at 4 p.m. A year ago, the Norse posted a 4-2 victory against Findlay in Basalyga’s NKU coaching debut.

NKU will play host to the John Toebben Classic Sept. 3-5 at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The John Toebben Classic is presented by Provident Bank, and the event is in memory of the late NKU soccer head coach who passed away on April 26, 2003.

NKU squares off against Ashland University (12-4-2 in 2003) at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 to open the John Toebben Classic. Ashland will play Christian Brothers University (8-9-0 in 2003) at 4 p.m. on Sept. 4. The event will conclude Sept. 5 when NKU takes on Christian Brothers at 3:30 p.m.

NKU finished 4-9-3 in 2003. The Norse also posted a 2-5-3 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

NKU opens GLVC play Sept. 17 with a 5 p.m. home match against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Defending GLVC champion Lewis University will visit the Town & Country Sports Complex Oct. 23 in the Norse’s home finale.

NKU welcomes back five starters and 12 letterwinners from last season. Senior goalie Nate Madden posted a 1.35 goals against average a year ago and returns to the NKU lineup.

Junior defender David Lies and junior midfielder Randy Walters will also be keys this season.
