Cougars score at 91:10 mark to defeat Norse, 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Mike Zaegel scored a goal 70 seconds into overtime Sunday as the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville men’s soccer team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 2-1, at Korte Stadium.

Zaegel’s goal was assisted by Pete Cacciatore at the 91:10 mark and enabled SIUE (9-1 overall, 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) to hand NKU its second straight one-goal loss. The Norse - ranked 17th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - also dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Quincy University on Friday.

NKU (6-2-2 overall, 1-2-1 GLVC) took a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match when Randy Walters found the back of the net with an unassisted goal. The Norse still held the advantage late in the second half, but SIUE’s Mike Banner scored off an assist from Ross Beveridge at the 77:04 mark to tie the score at 1-1.

SIUE controlled the ball much of the contest and finished with a 31-2 advantage in shot attempts. NKU goalie Nate Madden fought off the Cougar offensive onslaught most of the afternoon and collected 14 saves.

NKU will play host to the University of Southern Indiana at 5 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
